Over 1,000 foreign workers to join Cuba's May Day Rally

Havana, Apr 25 (Xinhua-ANI): More than 1,000 representatives from 162 unions and social movements from 62 countries and regions will join here the May Day celebrations, the official daily Granma reported Tuesday.

As many as 453 union leaders from 50 nations and regions will arrive in Cuba to mark the International Workers' Day on May 1 in Havana's Jose Marti Revolution Square.

Among the foreign visitors, the largest contingents will come from Mexico, the United States and Costa Rica, said Granma.

The official daily of the Cuban Communist Party (CCP) reported that the visitors, who belong to Cuban solidarity groups, will join Cuba in calling for an end to the U.S.-led economic embargo against the island nation and the return of the "Cuban Five" activists convicted of spying in the United States.

Traditionally, Cuba marks the May Day with parades and rallies in its major cities, with the largest event taking place in Havana and presided by top CCP leaders and government officials.

The growing private sector of the country will, for the first time, be the representatives in this year's celebration, said Granma.

According to Cuban officials, more than 370,000 people are working in the private sector, and authorities expect the number to rise to more than half a million this year. (Xinhua-ANI)
