London, April 24 (ANI): To mark the 132nd birth anniversary of Gideon Sundback, Google posted an interactive doodle that features a full-length zipper running down the centre of the global search engine's home page on Tuesday.
The Swedish-born engineer worked for the Universal Fastener Company and was tasked with improving the Judson C-curity Fastener, an early version of the zip.
Mr Sundback, who was married to the plant-manager's daughter Elvira Aronson, completed his design of the modern zip in 1913, two years after his wife's death, the Daily Mail reported.
A patent for the "separable fastener" was issued in 1917, and the device was initially used to close boots and tobacco pouches before being used more widely in fashion.
The original 1917 patent features drawings showing a zip head and interlocking clasps, along with the signature of the inventor.
The inventor was born in Smaland, Sweden before moving to Germany and later to the US where he began working at Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company in Pennsylvania.
He died in 1954, suffering a heart condition. (ANI)
