Queen instills little 'national pride' among majority of Scots

London, Mon, 23 Apr 2012 ANI

London, Apr 23 (ANI): Most Scots believe Queen Elizabeth contributes nothing to their sense of national pride, and prefer being represented by comedian Billy Connolly, a survey has revealed.

According to a YouGov poll, which conducted the survey, 55 per cent of Scots said the Queen did not make them feel proud to be Scottish.

Interestingly, according to Scotsman.com, 58 per cent of the people participating in the poll had a sense of national pride about comedian Billy Connolly. Another 84 per cent took pride in the Edinburgh Festival.

Despite the high profile of plans for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations this year, reports show that only 41 per cent of Scots believed the Queen made them feel proud to be Scottish.

The survey results found that the number of Scots feeling "Scottish not British" is at its highest level for six years at 31 per cent, and those feeling British, but not Scottish, is at a new low of five per cent.

However, John Curtice, Professor of Politics at Strathclyde University, said the low sense of Scottish pride that the Queen inspired was "not surprising".

"The monarchy is a symbol of Britain, and British symbols are stronger in England than they are in Scotland," he said.(ANI)
