Adebayor, Terry call for goal-line technology

London, April 16 (IANS) Tottenham Hotspurs striker Emmanuel Adebayor and Chelsea captain John Terry called for the use of goal-line technology in football after Juan Mata scored a controversial goal in Chelsea's FA Cup semi-finals triumph over the Spurs.

Chelsea thrashed Tottenham 5-1 at Wembley Sunday to set up a final clash with Liverpool in the FA Cup.

The Blues took the lead through a stunning goal from veteran Didier Drogba but Chelsea's second was marred in controversy. Mata's shot was deemed to have crossed the line by the referee but video replays seem to suggest otherwise.

The goal once again sparked the debate of the use of goal-line technology in the game which many former and current players believe is a necessity for the game to move ahead.

"To be honest, we have to blame the referee," Adebayor was quoted as saying by ESPN Soccernet. "I think we have done well and he has made a lot of mistakes and made a lot of wrong decisions.

"We are all disappointed. But what do you want me to tell you? How many goals scored this season were disallowed that were onside? To be honest, I'm just tired of it and everyone is talking about goal-line technology.

"They have to make something happen because it's killing the league, it's killing the FA Cup, it's killing the game, it's killing everything," he added.

Chelsea captain John Terry believes his side deserve their place in the FA Cup final but accepted they should not have been given a controversial goal.

"I thought it hit me and stayed out but I haven't seen it on the replays," Terry told ITV. "We've been calling for goal-line technology for a very long time. Let's hope that people make the right decisions," he said.

"It was an important game today and fortunately it went our way. Throughout the season things go with you and go against you and today it's gone with us and we're delighted. I thought we were the better side and scored some great goals."
