Becks' drinking joint with granddad spared from demolition

London, Sun, 15 Apr 2012 ANI

London, Apr 15 (ANI): A pub in London, where David Beckham used to drink with his grandfather, has been saved from being taken down.

The LA Galaxy player used to visit the Wenlock Arms in Hoxton, East London, with granddad Joe, who lived nearby, the Sun reported.

Joe, who Beckham said was his "footballing inspiration" after taking him to Spurs games as a lad, died aged 83 in 2009.

Locals recall the footie star popping in and buying drinkers a round when he was a world famous Man Utd player.

The pub which features in the opening credits of Al Murray's 'Compete For The Meat' chat show was earmarked for flats.

The development has been rejected by Hackney Council.

Now builders want to refurbish the pub and build luxury flats on top.

But 1,350 people have signed a petition against it and are lobbying Beckham for his backing.

"I'm sure he'd hate to see it turned into a fancy pub with luxury flats on top of it - nobody here wants it," a local Stan Goodling said. (ANI)
