Afghan govt appoints Rabbani's son as Peace Council head

Kabul, Sat, 14 Apr 2012 ANI

Kabul, Apr 14(ANI): Afghanistan has appointed former president Burhanuddin Rabbani's son as the leader of the High Peace Council

Salahuddin Rabbani, who is currently the Afghanistan's ambassador to Turkey, will replace his father as head of the Afghan High Peace Council, which is tasked with reaching out to the Taliban, the Dawn reports.

Rabbani, who had been tasked with negotiating a political end to the Afghan War, was killed on September 20 by a suicide bomber who was supposedly a peace emissary sent by the Taliban leadership.

His assassination was a major setback to efforts made by the Afghanistan-Pakistan joint commission for peace and reconciliation.

After Rabbani's killing, Afghan President Hamid Karzai had suspended peace talks with the Taliban, saying his government would focus on dialogue with Pakistan. (ANI)
