China,Business/Economy, Sat, 14 Apr 2012 IANS

Beijing, April 14 (IANS) The local government of a city in eastern China will auction 1,400 cars used by government officials as part of a reform measure.

The plan was launched by Wenzhou city in Zhejiang province, where 1,790 government cars are owned by 106 administrative organs and 207 public institutions, China Daily reported.

Among them, around 300 cars used for law enforcement and other public service will be kept, and the remaining cars -- about 1,400 -- will be sold.

The report said the city government will take measures to make it up for the people affected by the reform.

Those working in urban areas will get subsidies ranging from 400 yuan to 2,800 yuan (around $450) a month.

For those working in the outskirts, county-level officials can apply for rented cars.

Public security departments, courts, schools and hospitals have been excluded from the plan.
