New Delhi, April 11 (IANS) India Wednesday kept its air force and navy teams ready to address any eventuality in case a tsunami hits coastal states following an earthquake off Indonesia.
According to officials, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has rushed two Hercules C-130J transports from Hindon airbase near the capital to Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
These will carry two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to the islands where people have been moved to safer areas as a precautionary measure.
Besides, one IL-76 heavy freighter has also been kept on standby to fly from Chandigarh to Chennai, the officials said.
The aircraft will be carrying six NDRF teams to Tamil Nadu, if needed.
The IAF has also put on alert its southern command in Thiruvananthapuram and tri-services command in Port Blair. Dornier and AN32 aircraft have been kept on standby for relief and rescue purposes in case tsunami hits the east coast.
The officials said the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam is on "stage one alert" which is the highest degree of alertness.
Disaster relief teams of the navy are ready to embark on ships with relief material, the officials said.
