New Delhi, April 5 (IANS) Tata Chemicals, the market leader in the branded salt segment, Thursday launched the country's first iron fortified iodized salt that consumers can use in their daily diet to fight anaemia.
The packaged product, Tata Salt Plus, is available at Rs.20 a kg.
"We are focusing to help our customers to fight iron deficiency anaemia by offering an affordable, organic way in which to help meet established daily iron and iodine requirements," said R. Mukundan, managing director, Tata Chemicals.
According to the company, the technology to produce the iron fortified salt was developed under a long-term memorandum of understanding (MoU) between National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, and Tata Chemicals.
The company, which has a 65 percent market share of the organised branded salt segment, said it would work with non-government organisations (NGOs), public distribution systems (PDS) and state-run health schemes to provide the salt across the country apart from its 11 lakh outlets.
The company said it will request the government to decrease the railway freight charges on the product, bringing it at par with pharmaceuticals.
