New Delhi, Apr 5 (ANI): Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav on Thursday met Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to discuss with him the plight of the jewellers, who are on strike demanding a rollback in the proposed hike in excise duty on gold.
"Today we have met Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and have expressed concern that the government's decision of hike in excise on jewellery would lead to emergence of inspector raj," said Yadav.
"We also told him that all the workers of Bihar, Kolkata and people working in Delhi would face the brunt. We asked him to pay heed to their plight and we have given him a memorandum in this regard," he added.
The jewellers, who are on strike for the past 20 days, will be holding talks with Mukherjee on Friday.
The jewellers have called for a Maha rally on April 7 in Mumbai, and on April 11 at Ram Lila Maidan in New Delhi to highlight their demands.
They are also demanding a rollback of customs duty to the earlier 2 percent from the proposed 4 percent. (ANI)
