STORY: Police baton charge protesters campaigning against the state government's proposal to hike electricity and water charges in India's northern Jammu and Kashmir state on Monday (April 02).
The agitators from the regional Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Front (JKDF) were held the protest march towards the provincial secretariat.
They demonstrated against the government apathy towards the state's Jammu region, as the charges for essential services like electricity and water have amplified.
The police authorities approached the protestors on the way to the provincial secretariat, resulting in a skirmish between the two factions.
As the marchers were unmanageable, the police resorted to baton charge injuring few.
One of the protester Satish Singh denounced the action of the police to baton charge the activists.
"We had to face baton charge. We the people who shout "Long Live India" and who are the custodians of Jammu had to face the baton charge from the police. We condemn this act and the government in the strictest terms possible. We were protesting because they have raised the rates of electricity and water in Jammu," said Satish Singh, a protestor.
Since the past few months the provincial government faced the wrath as the opposition and the people of the state denounced it for being embroiled in corruption and their failure to address their woes.
