Allot entire 2,000 MW Kudankulam power to Tamil Nadu: Jayalalithaa

Chennai, March 31 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Saturday requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to allocate the entire 2,000 MW power to be generated by the two units at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) to the state which is facing severe power shortage.

In a letter to Singh, the text of which was released to the media here, Jayalalithaa said: "As you are aware, the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant comprises two units of 1,000 MW each. The total generation capacity of the two units is 2,000 MW out of which Tamil Nadu has been allocated a share of 925 MW only."

"In this context, I would like to recall that I had already made a request for allocation of 1,000 MW from the Central Pool last year against which a mere 100 MW was made available to Tamil Nadu," she added.

"Tamil Nadu is facing a severe power shortage and it would therefore be proper and justifiable that the entire power to be generated from the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant is made available to Tamil Nadu. This is also inevitable as the transmission corridor congestion problem still continues and has also been brought to your notice," she said.

Concluding her letter, Jayalalithaa hoped her request would be "positively considered as the state require and deserve this power".
