Air India employees withdraw indefinite strike threat

new Delhi , Fri, 30 Mar 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Mar.30 (ANI): Employees of India's ailing national carrier, Air India, on Friday called off their proposed threat to go on an indefinite strike from Monday (April 2) after the management promised to clear their salaries and other dues by June this year.

"We received their (strike) notice today. We have given them a payment schedule under which we will clear all the overdues by June. The strike has been called off," Air India Chairman and Managing Director Rohit Nandan told reporters here after a meeting with union representatives.

The notice for 'no pay, no work' agitation had been given by eight major unions of the airline, representing pilots, engineers and cabin crew among others, to protest the delay in payment of their salaries, productivity-linked incentives (PLI) and other allowances by over three months.

The union leaders and the management had a daylong meeting yesterday which had failed to yield any result. Both sides had decided to meet again on Friday.

Air India is in debt to the tune of Rs.67,000 crores, and has reported a loss of close to Rs.6,900 crores this fiscal.

The airline is also facing an average operational loss of about Rs.10 crore daily. (ANI)
