UN envoy says Syria needs 'significant' humanitarian help

New York, Wed, 28 Mar 2012 ANI

New York, Mar.28 (ANI): The U.N. Special Coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Robert Serry, has said that war-ravaged Syria needs serious and "significant" humanitarian help sonner than later.

Speaking after a U.N. humanitarian assessment mission had visited the Syrian cities and towns of Homs, Hama, Daraa and other cities, which have been centers of the country's uprising, Serry told the U.N. Security Council that the March 18-26 assessment "falls short of the U.N. request for unimpeded access for humanitarian organizations."

Fox News however, quoted Serry, as saying that U.N. participation "has allowed the gathering of critical information which confirms that there are significant needs for medical and food assistance, as well as education and nonfood items."

Syria said Tuesday it accepted a six-point plan by Kofi Annan, the U.N.-Arab League envoy, which includes a daily two-hour humanitarian pause and unimpeded access.(ANI)
