British fuel tanker drivers to go on strike

United Kingdom,Business/Economy, Tue, 27 Mar 2012 IANS

London, March 27 (IANS) British fuel tanker drivers have voted to go on strike in a bid to improve their working terms and conditions, the Unite union said Monday.

About 61 percent of those who have voted across seven companies were in favour of a strike action, said the union.

The union needed to give a seven-day notice, thus a strike will begin next Monday at the earliest, Xinhua reported.

Drivers are unsatisfied with growing job insecurity due to insecure contracts and increasing work pressure as they are forced to meet ever shorter delivery deadlines.

The government described the move as "a great shame," and is now mapping out contingency plans. Army drivers are being trained to deliver oil if the walkout comes about.

Unite is Britain and Ireland's largest trade union, with 1.5 million members working across a wide range of sectors.

A previous strike action in 2000 in Britain caused widespread disruption of supply to the country's 7,900 petrol stations.
