Patna, Mar 23 (ANI): A protest by student wing of Lok Janshakti Party turned violent on Friday after a mob of students tried to break into the premises of the state assembly in Patna.
The student body was protesting against the lack of student union elections for nearly three decades.
The students who had gathered outside the state assembly today, held their party banner and shouted slogans against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his Janata Dal (United) government.
"For the past 27 years there has not been an election for the student union. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has formed a list of commissions on the basis of caste but 65 percent students do not have any commission. The student Lok Janshakti Party has taken out this demonstration to protest against all such policies of this Nitish Kumar government, which we will overthrow and that is a promise of the student union," said Abhimanyu, president, student Lok Janshakti Party.
The situation turned irrepressible as a group of students attempted to break down the assembly gates and force their way into the premises. Some of them also started pelting stones on the standing police officials.
The police contingent resorted to baton charge and fired several rounds of tear gas to disperse the mob. They also opened a water canon on the protestors.
Several members of the student body were injured in the police retaliation. (ANI)
