Kolkata, March 23 (IANS) The West Bengal government has instituted the Krishi Ratna award for the best farmer in a block, Finance Minister Amit Mitra announced in his budget speech Friday.
"The government intends to initiate Krishi Ratna Awards for best farmer in a block from this year. This award shall comprise Rs. 5,000 in cash and a citation," Mitra said.
He said the award has been instituted in adherence to the slogan coined by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee - "Krishak Amader Gourav, Krishi Amader Sampad (Farmers are our pride, agriculture is our wealth)".
The annual award will be given on March 14, which the government has declared as 'Krishi Divas' (Farmers' Day)to commemorate the 14 people killed in police firing on protesters opposed to the setting up of a chemical hub in Nandigram of East Midnapore district on this day in 2007 during the erstwhile Left Front regime.
