Wellington, Mar 17(ANI): South Africa has defeated New Zealand by nine wickets in the second Test match at Hamilton, taking an unassailable lead of 1-0 in the three Test match series.

Fast bowler Vernon Philander starred for the Proteas, claiming six Kiwi wickets. Thereafter, the Proteas chased down a target of 101 on the third with relative ease at Seddon Park.

The win has left South Africa needing only a draw in the final test starting in Wellington on Friday to claim a series victory.

Philander sparked New Zealand's collapse to 168 all out with second innings figures of 6-44. It gave the South African pace man a match haul of 10-114, and after six tests his remarkable numbers stand at 45 wickets at an average of 13.60.

South Africa knocked off the runs just before the scheduled tea break, with Graeme Smith unbeaten on 55 and Hashim Amla on 46, Stuff.co.nz reports.

Dual batting collapses killed New Zealand's chances after they were sent in to bat on Thursday.

They lost five for none in their first innings, crashing from 133-2 to 185 all out, and then in their second innings yesterday were seven for three in the fifth over.

Earlier, 21-year-old Kane Williamson played a lone hand of 77 to try and defy the South African pace men. He batted 253 minutes and faced 193 balls in a gutsy innings, which ended in the first over after lunch when he was caught behind off Philander. (ANI)
