Home ministry releases House census, no. of houses goes up to 33 crore

New Delhi, Mar 13 (ANI): Union Home Secretary R.K. Singh on Tuesday released the final figures of the first phase of Census 2011 known as Houselisting and Housing Census which has recorded an increase in the number of houses to 33 crores from 25 crores.

Houselisting and housing census operations conducted to identify each building/census house and also to ascertain the quality of the census house, amenities accessible to it and assets available to the households living in those census houses has indicates a reduction in housing gap and an improvement in the construction material used for roof, wall and floor.

One of the major highlights of the census is the substantial improvement in the quality of housing both in rural and urban areas with the rural-urban gap being reduced by seven percentage points from 44 percent in 2001 to 37 percent.

The census has also highlighted growth in facilities like usage of electricity, drainage facility, toilet and usage of consumer goods in home like fridge, television, washing machnine etc.

The Census of India 2011 was conducted in two phases. The first phase, called the "Houselisting and Housing Census" was undertaken a few months prior to the second phase termed as "Population Enumeration". (ANI)
