Cameron accuses Syria of perpetrating 'medieval barbarity'

London, Sat, 03 Mar 2012 ANI

London, Mar 3(ANI): British Prime Minister David Cameron has accused Syria of perpetrating "medieval barbarity" and called on the international community to condemn mass killings in the country.

Cameron said the Syrian regime was "butchering its own people," adding the situation in Homs was "truly terrible - it is a scene of medieval barbarity".

"The world must come together to condemn the killing. I say to the Russians and the Chinese 'look hard at the suffering of Syria and think again about supporting this criminal regime'," he added.

Cameron said the UK would document atrocities in Syria to prepare for future prosecutions.

"We should do more to make sure that those who are responsible for atrocities are held to account. We need to document their crimes, it needs to be written down, we need to make sure that the evidence is there," The Telegraph quoted Cameron, as saying.

"We will make sure, as we did in Serbia, that there is a day of reckoning for those who are responsible," he added.

His statement came ahead of the British Foreign Office's plan to send researchers to Syria to begin interviewing victims.

It will also start training Syrian activists on how to collate legally admissible evidence.

"The priority is to ensure that testimonies of what has been happening to people in Syria are collected securely in one place so that they will be available for whatever use is most appropriate in future," a British Foreign Office official added.

Meanwhile, the Syrian regime has barred the International Committee of the Red Cross from entering the Baba Amr district to distribute food and medical supplies. (ANI)
