'Fully conscious' Nelson Mandela may leave hospital within two days

Johannesburg, Feb 26 (ANI): Former South African president Nelson Mandela, who was admitted to a hospital in Johannesburg after complaining of a long-standing stomach ailment, could be sent back to home within two days.

A spokesperson for President Jacob Zuma said in that 'Madiba is fine and fully conscious and the doctors are satisfied with his condition, which they say is consistent with his age.'

"He was in good health before admission in hospital, but doctors felt the complaint needed a thorough investigation. He underwent a diagnostic procedure as part of his ongoing medical management," News24 quoted Zuma's spokesperson Mac Maharaj, as saying.

"We are happy that he is not in any danger and thank the doctors for their hard work and professionalism. He is receiving good medical care and is expected to be discharged from hospital either tomorrow [Sunday] or Monday," he added.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Mandela became South Africa's first black president in 1994 after spending 27 years in prison for his fight against racist apartheid rule.

The health of the increasingly frail anti-apartheid icon, also known as Madiba, sparked national fears after he was taken to hospital early last year for an acute respiratory infection.

Mandela made his last public appearance at the final of the football World Cup hosted by South Africa in July 2010. (ANI)
