Ghaziabad, Feb 24 (ANI): Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has promised to change the face of Uttar Pradesh through development work, if elected to power in the state.
"Your state leaders benefit by creating differences between two castes, religions, take your support in the form of votes and vanish when are needed. This needs to change. The youth standing here will bring about that change," Gandhi told a gathering here.
"A lot of time has gone by since 22 years, give us five years and, I assure you a change, you will not be able to recognise your state in the next ten years," Gandhi added.
Taking a dig at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, Gandhi said the cruelty of the government rose to such levels that while throughout the day the poor worked for earning their bread and during the night they feared that 'elephants' would come and snatch their day's earnings.
'The fear of elephants haunted the people throughout these past five years,' he added.andhi's campaign efforts have seen him try to influence potential voters of a stronger mandate than the one in 2007, where the Congress secured just 22 seats in a 403-strong assembly.
The Uttar Pradesh polls are being viewed as an opportunity for major political parties to re-establish their foothold in the country's fifth largest and most populous state. new 403-member state assembly will be elected in March. The poll results will broadly indicate trends for the 2014 general elections. (ANI)
