Maoist threat deters development in rebel-infested areas of Jharkhand

Seraikhella-Kharsawan (Jharkhand), Feb.21 (ANI): The fear of Maoists in rebel-infested areas of Seraikella-Kharsawan in Jharkhand, has stalled development.

Labourers reportedly dread being attacked by Maoists at construction sites.

The villagers complained that there has been terror all around after Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar in 2000.

Several politicians have suggested that only development could serve as a solution to tackle this threat, apart from police action and political dialogue.

"There are no roads, schools and no medical facilities over here. The reason behind this is that since the formation of Jharkhand, there has been drastic impact on the development due to the fear of Maoists," said Pappu Singh, a local.

According to media reports, Maoists have flourished in the eastern state, primarily due to underdevelopment in the areas.

Half laid roads and partially constructed buildings are a common sight in the villages of the district.

The villagers said that they were afraid to step out of their houses, as they feared a sudden attack by Maoists anywhere.

"The Maoists are definitely stalling development. Though the government launches development projects here, the fear of Maoists has halted development," said Kanchan Singh Munda, a local.

Maoists have attacked many schools, hospitals, and government institutions and this offensive has severely affected children's education and has brought normal life to a standstill.

According to analysts, the Maoists oppose all development activities such as the construction of roads, schools, hospitals, drip irrigation and drinking water facilities.

Contractors are killed, schools are torched, electric poles are pulled down and projects, which could lead to development, are halted.

For, if development comes to the area, Maoists fear that their support base will diminish.

The Maoist insurgency has gripped nearly one-third of the country, spreading into the interiors of 20 states of the country. (ANI)
