Washington, Feb 20 (ANI): American senator John McCain has said he supports talks between the United States and the Taliban in Afghanistan, putting himself at loggerheads with Mitt Romney, who he is backing for Republican presidential nomination.
"I think it's important to have talks wherever you can," ABC News quoted McCain, as saying.
"We have to have an outcome on the battlefield...that would motivate a successful conclusion," he added.
Romney, who has McCain's backing, has opposed US involvement in Taliban talks.
"The right course for America is not to negotiate with the Taliban while the Taliban are killing our soldiers. The right course is to recognize they're the enemy of the United States," the former Massachusetts governor said during a recent presidential debate.
According to the report, McCain, who also said he is for a long-term American presence in Afghanistan, said he has not "had a conversation" with Romney regarding this issue.
McCain, added that Romney had a "realistic" approach.
Meanwhile, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has confirmed for the first time this week that peace settlement talks between the US, Afghanistan, and the Taliban have begun. (ANI)
