Voters in Pratapgarh District press for infrastructure development

Pratapgarh, Sat, 18 Feb 2012 ANI

Pratapgarh, Feb 18 (ANI): The voters in Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh District have demanded the development of infrastructure ahead of polls in their district.

The district, which relies mostly on agriculture because of the fertile land, is famous for the production of the citrus fruit-Indian gooseberry (Amla).

The biggest challenge confronting the people of Pratapgarh district is the dilapidated condition of the roads as it makes commuting extremely difficult for them.

Munna Ansari, a resident, lamented that the drainage system in the district was in shambles and during the monsoons, the situation worsens.

"The major problems here are that the roads are bad, there is no proper drainage system, and neither there is continuous supply of electricity. There are problems everywhere in the area. When it rains, the sewers get blocked and commuting becomes almost impossible. Also as I said earlier, the condition of the roads here are absolutely pathetic," Ansari said.

Another disenchanted resident Gyan Dutt Dwivedi said that the current government and the legislator had failed to address the woes of the people.

"Our current government and legislator have been totally ineffective. The legislator has never come here and met the people to understand problems. Even if he did, he would go to the house of his associates and then return. This time when he came, the locals did not acknowledge his presence," said Dwivedi.

Voting in Uttar Pradesh is taking place in seven-phases.

The polls opened on February 8 and will end on March 3 and the results would be announced on March 6.

Uttar Pradesh is politically important as it sends 80 members to the 543 elected parliamentary seats in New Delhi, making control of the state crucial to run the government at centre. (ANI)
