London, Feb 17(ANI): Nigerian al-Qaeda operative, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, dubbed as the underwear bomber, shouted 'God is great', as he was led from court following a life imprisonment sentence for the failed 2009 attack on a flight.
US District Judge Nancy Edmunds criticised Abdulmutallab for failing to show remorse.
The ruling came after Flight 253 passengers and crew testified that Abdulmutallab had tried to ignite explosives smuggled in his underwear before landing in Detroit on Christmas Day 2009.
Abdulmutallab did not make eye contact, as several passengers described how the failed attack had devastated their lives.
"Since that day, my life has changed," The Telegraph quoted a Northwest Flight attendant, Lamare Mason, as saying.
Another passenger and a New York immigration lawyer Theophilus Maranga said that he was now afraid to fly following the incident.
The judge did not reduce Abdulmutallab's sentence on the grounds that no one was injured in his foiled attempt to target the Northwest Airlines flight.
Judge Edmunds rejected arguments by Abdulmutallab's lawyer that a life sentence was unconstitutional because passengers were never at risk of death or serious injury.
Prosecutors also showed an FBI video depicting the extent of damage that could have been caused by explosives carried by Abdulmutallab.
Abdulmutallab admitted that he had carried out the plot to blow up the Northwest Airlines plane before it landed at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on behalf of AlQaeda. (ANI)
