Musharraf terms next polls in Pak as 'mother of all elections'

Lahore, Thu, 16 Feb 2012 ANI

Lahore, Feb 16(ANI): Former Pakistan president General (r) Pervez Musharraf has said the next polls in Pakistan will be the "mother of all elections".

"If I am allowed to use Saddam Hussein's phrase ... the next elections in Pakistan are going to be the mother of all elections," the Wall Street Journal quoted Musharraf, as telling a 750-member gathering at Drew University in New Jersey.

"In the West, there is a perception that democracy is the holding of fair elections. I believe that's a misperception - democracy starts with how the elected government governs," he added.

He also said that he was determined to return to Pakistan, The Daily Times reports.

"Any logical person would ask, 'Why the hell are you going back?' But I've reached a stage where I think of a cause greater than myself ... Even at the risk of endangering myself, I am prepared to go back."

He stressed on the need to challenge the political status quo in Pakistan

"There has to be a political alternative capable of delivering to the state. Pakistan is not an 11-man cricket team," he said, an apparent reference to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan.

Musharraf claimed to have provided Pakistan with "honest governance" during his eight-year rule despite declaring a state of emergency in 2007, suspending the constitution and shutting down independent media outlets, spurring an out pouring of protests.

"Democracy is empowering the people, the women and the minorities. I can talk for an hour about what I did for each one of these causes," he added. (ANI)
