Faridabad (Haryana): The 26th Surajkund Craft Fair this year chose Assam as its theme state, in a bid to spread awareness about the northeast and provide exposure and access to bigger markets to artisans from the region.
Visitors made a beeline traditional Assames handloom made of Eri and Muga silk in a blend of red and white to produce traditional Gamochas, Sarees, coats and Dhotis.
Apart from handloom products, several artisans exhibited cane and bamboo products that were also appreciated.
"I have heard a lot about the Surajkund Crafts Fair in Assam. It is my first visit here and I have got good response from the people for my products," said Sri Hariwal from Dibrugarh, Assam.
"It is a good experience as I can find traditional Assamese products that are not available here," Babita Barua, a visitor.
The fortnight long fair was organized under the aegis of Haryana Tourism in coordination with the Assam Government.
It provided the visitors a window to the Assamese dances, culture and food. This was the second time the Assam theme was implemented on the fair after 1998.
Over 700 craftsmen from different parts of the country exhibited their products.
"Assam is a very culturally rich state. Through this festival we are trying to popularize it across the country," said Rajesh Joon, Officer In-Charge, Surajkund Fair.
"We are exploring the culture of Assam. It has been a good experience seeing new dances and eating Assamese food," said Subarna, a visitor, New Delhi.
The artisans from Northeast India have been exhibiting their products in fairs across the country. And everywhere they have gone they have got a tremendous response from the buyers. (ANI)
