Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood slams 'foreign funded' protests

Middle East, Thu, 02 Feb 2012 ANI

Cairo, Feb 2(ANI): The Muslim Brotherhood has slammed the ongoing protests in Egypt, and echoed the country's military rulers' view that secular and liberal were funded by foreign countries to spread chaos across the country.

"The parliament has become the real representative of the Egyptian people," the Brotherhood statement said, calling on the military to protect the parliament, state institutions and the military itself "which some of these (protest) groups think must be brought down."

The statement comes after Muslim Brotherhood members clashed with protesters for the second time outside the parliament building in Cairo, triggering fears of a bloody conflict.

The protests have occurred as liberal and secular activists who led 2011 uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak's regime are suspicious of the Brotherhood and suspect that the veteran Islamist movement is working with the military.

The Muslim Brotherhood statement also called for a military probe of pro-democracy and human rights groups, as well as an end to protests to complete the transition to democracy.

The statement comes in the wake of Egyptian security agents raiding offices of 10 groups, and banning some foreign activists from leaving the country.

A Muslim Brotherhood spokesperson, Mahmoud Ghozlan, said the protesters are mostly those who were dissatisfied with the Brotherhood's success in the parliament, Fox News reports.

One of the protesters, Heba Ghannam alleged that she was beaten but a Muslim Brotherhood supporter Abdel-Rahman Ouda rejected her claims.

The Muslim Brotherhood's political outfit have emerged a dominant group in the new parliament, winning nearly 50 percent of the seats. (ANI)
