ICC denies agreement over Saif Gaddafi being tried in Libya

Tripoli, Tue, 24 Jan 2012 ANI

Tripoli, Jan 24 (ANI): The International Criminal Court (ICC) has denied that it has agreed that former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, could be tried in Libya.

Libyan Justice Minister Ali Humaida Ashour earlier claimed that the ICC has decided to let Saif al-Islam be tried in Libya rather than in The Hague.

ICC spokesman Fadi El-Abdallah later denied that there had been any such decision made by the ICC judges, Xinhua reports.

The ICC has indicted Saif al-Islam for crimes against humanity, but new Libyan leaders say they want him to stand trial in Libya.

Libyan interim Prime Minister Abdel Rahim el-Keeb has promised a fair trial for Saif al-Islam, who was seized in a southern Libyan town last December.

Earlier this month, the ICC said it would give Libya until January 23 to provide information on Saif al-Islam's mental and physical health. (ANI)
