US tries to resolve tensions between Afghanistan, Qatar to facilitate Taliban peace talks

Kabul, Mon, 23 Jan 2012 ANI

Kabul, Jan 23(ANI): The US special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Marc Grossman has tried resolve tensions between Afghanistan and Qatar to facilitate peace talks with the Taliban.

The "work that still needs to be done [is] first, Qatar and Afghanistan need to be in direct contact with one another," The Wall Street Journal quoted Grossman, as saying.

Tensions between Afghanistan and Qatar have escalated after the latter agreed to host a Taliban representative office to facilitate peace talks.

Afghan officials said Qatar is trying to play a major political role in the region and added that it must apologize on the issue.

"Afghanistan is not a political laboratory for foreigners. Peace negotiations will be led by the Afghan nation and no other country," Karzai had said.

He also said that he had hoped a Taliban representative office would be set up instead in an "important Islamic country like Saudi Arabia or Turkey."

Karzai's aides said that the Afghanistan is worried that it would be excluded from the peace talks between the U.S. and the Taliban, as the latter has agreed only to meet with American officials so far, the paper reported.(ANI)
