New Delhi, Sat, 21 Jan 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Jan 21 (ANI): Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi on Saturday said steps will be taken to expand the railway network in the Maoist infested areas of Chhattisgarh.

Trivedi conveyed this to a delegation that had come from Chattisgarh's Bastar region.

The delegation consisted of central and state lawmakers besides trade and industry representatives.

They demanded that the Howrah-Koraput railway service be extended upto Jagdalpur as it would help the population of Bastar area and connect them with the rest of the country.

Trivedi said that despite certain economic constraints, he had assured them of possible swift action in implementing their demand for extension of train links in Maoist affected areas.

He stated that projects in such areas of the country were above the realm of commercial profits and highlighted that the Indian Railways is a key player in social welfare.

"We have stated clearly that whatever is possible, will be done," Trivedi said.

"We had a healthy discussion, and, it was also decided to meet the chief minister of the state (Chhattisgarh) on February 10. We have been travelling in all states, we will certainly go there, as we have received a confirmation from the chief minister," he added.

Trivedi said he would not be in a position to provide specific information on the proposed tracks but added that efforts would be made to include the proposal in the Railway Budget

The Maoist insurgency has gripped nearly a third of the country, spreading into the interiors of 20 of India's 28 states.

The Central Government is determined to take on this internal security challenge by introducing pro-people development measures. (ANI)
