New Delhi, Jan 19 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday welcomed the grant of bail to former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (OC) chairman Suresh Kalmadi by the Delhi High Court.
"It is a good thing. The court has taken this decision after necessary thought. This is a good thing," Dikshit told media here.
Meanwhile, Congress party spokesperson Rashid Alvi, however, dubbed the move as part of legal procedure.
"The law always does its work. Every citizen of the country is equal in the eyes of the law. If somebody has got a bail then it is part of the legal procedure," said Alvi.
Besides Kalmadi, former CWG organizing committee director general V K Verma was also granted bail by the court.
Kalmadi and Verma had moved an appeal before the court on the basis of the Supreme Court granting bail to the accused in the 2G telecom case.
Last June, a trial court had rejected Kalmadi's bail plea, after which, he approached the Delhi High Court.
Kalmadi was arrested by the CBI on April 25, 2010 for fraud and conspiring with other officers of the Organising Committee for overpaying a Swiss firm Rs.95 crores for timing and scorekeeping equipment that was used at different venues during the Commonwealth Games.
The 66-year-old has also been accused of sanctioning payments to AM Films and AM Car at rates that were hugely inflated. (ANI)
