Rahul Gandhi beckons youth to change scenario in Uttar Pradesh

Lalitpur, Wed, 18 Jan 2012 ANI

Lalitpur, Jan 18 (ANI): Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has said that Uttar Pradesh needs a change in the scenario of the government, and only the youth of the region can deliver it

Addressing an election rally here on Tuesday, Gandhi said: "We have to transform Uttar Pradesh. Who will change it? Only the youth can change it, nobody else. You gave 22 years to these people, while clapping for the government in Delhi. Put the Congress party here, and you will be clapping for the state of Uttar Pradesh. Indeed, Uttar Pradesh will develop. Schools will function and roads will be built."

He also made a scathing attack on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati's minister Nasimuddin, whom he alleged had coveted some for the tractors that the Central Government had sent to be distributed among local farmers.

"Nasimuddin is the minister of Mayawati. The tractors were given to his children. We had sent the tractors for the farmers, not for the minister. The children of a minister do not need a tractor. The millions of rupees which belonged to you (the people), was looted away," Rahul Gandhi opined.

Nasimuddin has been facing charges of corruption regarding various matter sand has also been under the scanner of the state ombudsman in this regard.

The assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh is seen as an opportunity for the Congress party to re-establish its foothold in its erstwhile political base in the country's fifth largest and most populous state.

Polls in Uttar Pradesh are to be conducted in seven phases between February 8 and March 3. The counting of votes would take place on March 6.

Uttar Pradesh will elect a new 403-member state assembly in March, and the poll results are expected to broadly indicate trends for 2014 general elections. (ANI)
