Orissa cracker blast victim dies, toll rises to eight

Balasore (Orissa), Sep 29 (IANS) A 14-year-old boy who was critically injured in a firecracker blast that killed seven people in Orissa died Monday during treatment, police said, taking the toll to eight.

 

Seven people, including three young children, were killed Sunday evening in a firecracker explosion in Gunduripada village in Balasore district, some 230 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.

 

 

The firecrackers were kept in the house of a manufacturer, Srustidhar Nayak.

 

 

'A 14-year-old boy sustained serious injuries and was admitted to a hospital. He died during treatment,' a district police official said.

 

 

'With the latest death, toll from the crackers blast has gone up to eight,' he said.

 

 

'Nayak's family members and some neighbours were watching television at home when the firecrackers exploded. The intensity of the blast was such that the entire house was severely damaged and the seven victims died on the spot,' senior district police officer Monoranjan Mohanty told IANS.

 

 

'The victims include a 60-year-old man and four girls and two boys, all aged between nine and 20 years,' Mohanty said.

 

 

'Nayak, his wife and one of their children were not at home at the time of the accident,' Mohanty added.
