Srinagar, Nov.26 (ANI): Curfew was imposed in Srinagar on Friday, a day after All Party Hurriyat Conference Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was assaulted.
Five areas were placed under curfew after the Hurriyat Conference called for a 12-hour shutdown.
Curfew was clamped in Rainawari, Nowhatta, Khanyar, MR Gunj and Safakadal areas of old Srinagar.
"I do not understand when Syed Geelani said that we should go to Idgah, why was curfew imposed? Many areas have been closed because of the curfew. Today is Jummah (Friday), and we are going to offer special prayers in mosques. They (the government) have imposed curfew, which has restricted the movement of people," said Zahoor Ahmad, a resident.
Shops remained closed and people were stopped from moving on roads.
On Thursday, the Mirwaiz was beaten up by activists of the Bajrang Dal, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Kashmiri Pandits for his anti-Indian comments.
Speaking at a human rights seminar, Mirwaiz had declaimed some pro-freedom slogans which provoked the audience. By Fayaz Ahmad (ANI)
