Dravid, Dhoni put RoI on the front foot

Vadodara, Fri, 26 Sep 2008 NI Wire

At the stumps of the third day of the ongoing Irani Cup, the Rest of India (RoI) team placed itself in a comforting state after posting a 378 runs target for Ranji Trophy champion Delhi and taking three wickets in their second innings with two days to play for.

Adding to its first innings total of just 177, Delhi lost its first wicket of Sehwag (3) on the very third over and came down to 37 for 2 after losing the wicket of Virat Kohli (16 off 26 ball). Paceman Zaheer Khan got both the wickets as batsmen were trapped leg before the wicket.

Delhi further brought down with the fall of third wicket of Rajat Bhatia, who scored 31 runs before falling to the bowling of Harbhajan Singh. Now it’s up to the opener Gautam Gambhir who remained unbeaten at 51 to take Delhi’s innings forward in the 4th day (on Saturday).

Earlier in the second innings of Rest of India (RoI), moving ahead of the score 99/1, Dravid and S. Badrinath (36) started off well and put in 67 runs for the second wicket. However, it was the partnership between Dravid (69) and MS Dhoni which built the innings for RoI. Dhoni made a quick fire of 84 from 113 balls with the help of 12 boundaries and one lofty six.

M Kaif (0), VVS Laxman (18) and Anil Kumble (9) got out easily without much contribution. However, RP Singh added a valuable 24 runs to take the total to 302.

As Akash Chopra is suffering an ankle injury while fielding, it is highly unlikely for him to play unless it is much needed. So, it’s now up to Gambhir to consolidate the innings without losing too much wicket.
