Andhra steals crucial lead against Bengal

Dec 27:  Pacers led by P. Vijay Kumar D. Kalyankrishna and Israel Raju ripped apart Bengal batting line-up to snatch a vital 23-run first innings lead

Riding on the shoulders of their pace attack Andhra Pradesh staged their fightback, after getting out on 121 in their first innings, dismissing Bengal for a paltry 98 in the first innings to steal a vital 23-run first innings lead on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Super League Group ‘B’ match played at the Eden Gardens here on Wednesday.

The match is still wide open as Eden track is still live and deadly and it was not being easy for the batsmen of either side to negotiate it on their own terms. Andhra Pradesh batsmen again floundered against Bengal seam bowling with Ranadeb Bose picking up four wickets in the Andhra second innings to finish the day at 147/6 at the end of day two.

Andhra are now 170 runs ahead of Bengal as the first session belonged to medium-pacer Vijay Kumar. Vijay struck twice in the day’s first over removing Wriddhiman Saha and Priyankar Mukherjee off the second and fourth ball ending up with a career best figures of five for 31.

Apart from opener Hemal Watekar (67) who produced the best knock of the day nobody stood against Bengal bowling. SS Paul got rid of Prashant Reddy (12), before the aggressive Hemant Watekar (67) and D Kalyankrishna (12) put on 41 runs for the second wicket to take the visitors to 88/1.

Meanwhile, Ranadeb Bose who got his rhythm back swung the ball both ways to quickly shown the door to Kalyankrishna (12), Y Gnaneswara Rao (6), ASK Verma (6) and B Sumanth (1) in a six over spell to cut down Andhra to 109/6 from 88/1.

Later skipper MSK Prasad (26 batting) and AG Pradeep (16 not out) prevented any further fall down.
