Shimla, Sept 23 (ANI): Rescue operations in Shimla District of Himachal Pradesh are in progress after landslides and floods triggered by heavy rains caused immense loss to life and property.
"Thirty seven people have died and public and private property has also been damaged," said J. S. Rana, Deputy Commissioner of Shimla District.
"According to the reports that we have received till now more than Rs 400 crores of public and private property has been damaged. Major loss is that highways and rural roads have been damaged; About ten to twelve bridges have been washed off, said Rana, and added, "As far as the lives of people is concerned, wherever we thought it appropriate we have evacuated them and taken them to safe places."
Even as the administration is making efforts to evacuate people, its reach remains limited. People are wary of leaving the villages for fear of imminent landslides in the Rampur Division.
"Sera village has become unsafe; it can collapse anytime as cracks have appeared all around the village. Kumsu, another nearby village can also collapse any time. Both the villages have become completely unsafe," said Krishan Gopal, the village headman of Broli in Shimla.
The evacuation efforts are underway in three sub-divisions of Rampur, Rohuru and Chopal in Shimla District.
The damage has been extensive and it would take the villagers quite some time to reconstruct their homes and hearths.
"My house has been damaged by floods. I have lost nine animals, including a cow and a calf," said Mehar Singh, a resident of Rajpura village in Shimla District.
Himachal Pradesh has been witnessing incessant rains in the past few days. The heavy downpour has caused floods and triggered landslides in the lower Himalayas. Landslides have affected many districts of the state including the capital, Shimla. (ANI)
