Dec 20: Wait is over now for the much-talked Rs 1 lakh car from Tata Motors with its announcement of the “peoples’ car” to be exhibited for the first time to the general public on January 10 in Auto Expo 2008 in New Delhi though the commercial launch will take place later in 2008.
But till January 10 every act is doing to keep the secret intact of how Ratan Tata’s Lakhtakia car looks alike. It is kept around in Pune usually covered with sack cloth and camouflage. A reliable company has been entrusted with the job of taking the car secretly to Delhi under tight security and every effort should be done to conceal it from peoples’ eye before D-day.
Earlier in Tata tea annual general meeting in August, Ratan Tata had expressed his doubt over the delay of project and said although the work is delayed quite a bit, but he had assured that every effort was doing to compensate this delay. However, he had not declared deadlines then, saying that vested interest were at work.
According to sources Tata Motors has planned to display 6 to 8 models of the people’s car codenamed X3 at the Auto Expo at Pragati Maidan. Tata Motors has purchased the biggest place on rent whose costs comprising airline/hotel charges for employees and money paid to the models could be amounted to 15 to 20 crores this year. The ‘venue-Auto Expo’ is chosen because of the company wanted to maintain its record of unveiling the new car here.
On January 9, the cars will be brought completely wrapped and placed in the pavilion of Pragati Maidan, the venue of expo.
Tata Motors and Fiat India Automobile mutually have planned to display a joint show in a pavilion spread over 5200 sq.m. at the ninth Auto Expo commencing on January 9.
Besides this highly-talked Lakhtakia car, Tata Motors will display a range of new passenger vehicles, while Fiat will display passenger car from its international range. It is to be noted here that Tata Motors has an agreement with Fiat Auto to build a pick-up vehicle in Argentina.
The cars will have a wide variety of colours and will be gearless, as in scooter, which is also considered as the inspiration of the product.
So far the world’s cheapest car, expected to be, will have four doors and four to five seaters whose engine capacity will be 600cc.
Recently, Business Week, a renowned business magazine in its latest edition has marked “Rs 1 lakh car” as the trendsetter of the year 2007, and has been listed Ratan Tata among the world’s “Most Important People” of the year.
Owing to its cheapest price, the BPO cab vendors, taxi operators and tour operators are eagerly awaiting the car. But the government prior permission will be mandatory to use it commercially.
Harish Sabarwal, Convener, Federation of Delhi Transport Associations said, “We are expecting the government to allow its commercial use. It could be a big hit in the tourist segment and also for intra-city usage. As the price is lucrative enough, it may create huge employment opportunities.”
The upcoming cheapest car has generated fear among the auto manufacture company as their business could be affected badly in view of its low price as it would become cheaper alternative to taxi drivers.
Tata is expected to launch both petrol and diesel edition of this car. The company is planning to launch them in the market sometime by the middle of 2008.
