Dec 18: Delhi’s Shikhar Dhawan (148) and Virat Kohli (154 no) batted with panache, stitching a massive second wicket partnership of 268 runs to pile up 337 for the loss of two wickets against Karnataka on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Group A super league match here on Monday.
Delhi skipper Mithun Minhas decided to bat, as the duo of Dhawan and Kohli made mockery of Karnataka bowlers despite losing seasoned Aakash Chopra early on in the innings. Seamer S. Dhananjaya trapped Akash Chopra in the day’s sixth over.
Dhawan’s innings (148, 307m, 211b, 24x4) was a scorcher as his willow did a lot of talking during the day, while Virat (154 n.o., 334m, 292b, 21x4, 1x6) had a fairly sedate start but later matched up his partner in the runs galore. They both hammered the Karnataka bowling attack at their own will.
Dhawan was in great touch, especially while playing delightful strokes square off the wicket. The southpaw reached his second century of the season just after lunch by hitting successive boundaries to Dhananjaya.
Dhawan fell after tea as he nicked one to first-slip off Joshi, where Robin Uthappa made no mistake in pouching it after being late in the previous one. His 211-ball knock included 24 boundaries.
Virat went all over to C. Raghu for a six to complete his ton. Manhas joined the proceedings and remained unbeaten on 26 while at the other end Virat continued his run feast to notch up his 150, driving seamer Vinay Kumar for four.
