Dec 15: Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has deposed a state of emergency and restored the country’s constitution from the immediate effect as per pre-decided scheduled.
Pak president has declared to pull back the emergency rule on December 16, but later re-declared it to on December 15 a day before from the date of deposing. Today Pak President has issued an order to lift emergency at 2:00 pm local time, law minister Afzal Haider informed media today.
But before lifting the rule, Musharraf has yesterday introduced six new amendments in the national constitutions, informed law ministry.
“The President has promulgated some amendments in the constitution, including one which says that all those judges who did not take oath under emergency rule cease to hold their offices," said Attorney General Malik Qayyum.
General Qayyum is known as a close supporter of Musharraf and it is assumed that he has played a key role in drafting the order to end the emergency. The experts believe that this new amendments would consolidate Musharraf’s position and there would be no legal challenges to his action of sacking judges of the superior judiciary.
A statement issued by ministry of law that informed that “the amendments were made to Article 41(3), Article 44(2), Article 270C, Article175, Article193 and Article194”.
The international communities have welcomed the president’s move of lifting decision, but on the contrary experts still believes, “if media doesn’t get relief from the imposed ban, the forth coming election would not be fair. The results may go in the president’s favour despite of decrement in his popularity.”
Before pulling emergency rule, at least five people include two soldiers and three civilians were killed in a suicide bomb attack outside an army base in north-west Pakistan while as much as six were injured in this suicidal bomb blast attack.
President Musharraf had imposed emergency rule on November 03 to confront the extremist and foreign fundamentalist attackers as per his officially statement said. In this emergency rule, all media except government and state media had been banned, several top judges include the then chief justice Iftikhar Chowdhary were unseated from theirs’ post and Marshal Law has been regulated entire the nation.
Former Chief Justice Iftikhar Chowdhary is still in house arrest. While both former prime ministers, Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif have been returned home from exile and are preparing for the forthcoming general election scheduled on January 08, 2008.
