Dec 10: The special squad of Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) of New Zealand revealed that the substance found on the letter is mere fertiliser and not the ‘Anthrax’ powder as per their primary investigation done in Auckland today.
According to reports, two separate letters were found in two media organisations TVNZ and Greenstone Pictures within a span of 30 minutes. When both the letters were opened, there was nothing except a note found in the envelope written “Anthrax” on it. The whole media got scared of it and subsequently called the police. A special bomb disposal squad reached on the spot and handled the situation carefully.
After primary investigation, police found that the received letters were posted on the same day and from the same place. After further investigation police found that the substance layered on the letter was a sort of fertiliser and not the spores of Anthrax in the form of powder.
“It did not look like anthrax, it looked like washing powder," said TVNZ spokesperson.
The three persons (all women), who opened the said envelope and were present in the reception room, had gone for shower as a precautionary measure. Later all of them were sent to their home.
According to the police spokeswoman, “The notes enclosed in the envelopes are not signed and it is impossible to assume the motive of the senders at this stage.”
Anthrax frights have been usually frequent in New Zealand after September 11. Though United States Embassy in Wellington in the later part of 2001 became the biggest witness of ‘Anthrax’ scare. There were several empty envelopes found naming ‘Anthrax’ and ‘Cyanide’ and most of the time ‘Jihad’ was written found on the letter inside.
Anthrax is a bacterial infection spread due to ‘Bacillus Anthracis’. It is a family bacteria that primarily affects livestock but that later can spread to humans affecting their skin, intestines, or lungs. It is usually curable in humans, but mostly fatal in animals.
