Coimbatore, July 1 (ANI): Lawyers in Coimbatore took to the streets in protest against police personnel beating up one of their colleagues on Wednesday.
Around 200 lawyers boycotted court proceedings and demonstrated on city roads demanding action against the policemen who thrashed Kalai Arasan, a local advocate.
The police personnel named in the attack were first arrested and then released on posting the bail amount.
This angered the lawyers who thronged the office of the city police commissioner and demanded stern action against the guilty.
"The Commissioner has given an evasive reply and is not prepared to take action.
The police is not going to take action, and they want to help the police people.
This is very clear from the commissioner also," said Nanda Kumar, President, Coimbatore Bar Association.
Kalai Arasan sustained stomach injuries and is still hospitalised.
"When I was coming by my bike, near the Gandhipuram Corner, a person on a two-wheeler came in front of me. He was drunk and started arguing with me as to why I had not let him cross the road and even threatened me using swear words. And, before I could realize what he meant, he roughed me up and soon another cop joined him," lamented Arasan.
The lawyers have threatened to continue with their agitation till the errant policemen are punished. (ANI)
