Chennai, June 17 (ANI): Lawyers of Madras High Court in Tamil Nadu are on an indefinite hunger strike to press for their demand to recognize Tamil as the official court language.
Presently, English is the official language of the court.
The indefinite hunger strike began on Thursday (June 17) inside the premises of the High Court in provincial capital Chennai.
Agitating lawyers demanded the State Government to push for Presidential assent to the resolution adopted by Tamil Nadu Assembly four years ago calling for use of Tamil as the official language in the Madras High Court.
"We lawyers are observing fast unto death reminding the Tamil Nadu government to get President assent for the resolution which was adopted four years back to declare Tamil as the official language of the Madras High Court. For the past four years, the government has not taken any step to get the President's assent. It is our grievance," said P.Sesubalan Raja, Senior Advocate of the Madras High Court.
The lawyers also demanded that the Central Government should take a decision ahead of the forthcoming World Classical Tamil Conference to be held at Coimbatore from June 23 to 27. (ANI)
