Darjeeling, June 12 (ANI): Darjeeling town has slipped into chaos following the killing of Gorkha leader Madan Tamang last month.
Shutdowns and a chaotic political disorder have plagued life in the city during the peak tourist season, amidst an ethnic Gorkha agitation gone hayware since the killing of Tamang.
Tamang's death has come as a setback to the agitation for a separate Gorkhaland, spearheaded by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) whose activists are suspected to be involved in Tamang's killing.
"The tripartite meeting I read about in newspapers would have no meaning till there is peace and democracy in Darjeeling, they are absolutely meaningless," said Laxman Pradhan, General Secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League.
Meanwhile, GJM chief Bimal Gurung said that they have deferred a shutdown called in the region in support of their separate statehood demand.
The GJM has held several rounds of tripartite talks with representatives of central and West Bengal governments over its demand for separate Gorkhaland state. (ANI)
