Shimla, June 12 (ANI): A three-day-long food festival showcasing organic food items got underway in Shimla.
Inaugurated by state Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal on Thursday, the fair was organized by the Palampur Agriculture University in collaboration with the tourism department.
The organizers said that the organic food fair would provide farmers with a platform to sell their organic produce.
"The food festival that is being organized here is primarily for promotion and advocacy of organic food. It is for the first time that people will get to eat organic food. The agenda behind this is that the organic producers of Himachal will get a market," said Tej Pratap, organizer and Vice-Chancellor of Palampur Agriculture University of Himachal Pradesh.
He added that the fair would also provide a platform for the farmers to interact with experts and learn more about organic crop cultivation.
R S Minhas, a farmer said that such fairs are very motivating and should be organized frequently.
"This fair is very beneficial for the farmers but the organizers should come out with a programme on consumer awareness. Unless the consumers are not aware of the food item they are eating and what they are eating, till then the impact of won't be effective. As far as farmers are concerned they need to be educated through the interactive session," said Minhas.
The fair that attracted a large number of visitors will conclude today. (ANI)
