Nov 26: The wind of change was inevitable in Australian politics and the result even could not surprised John Howard who ruled for 11 years said in a surrendering tone before the results were out, “Although it is still officially in doubt, it is very likely to be the case that I will no longer be the member for Bennelong.” Bennelong is the most ethnically diverse district of Australia.
Kevin Rudd of Labor Party won with an awesome margin of votes. His party made the distinction of becoming the only party to govern at all levels of parliamentary government in Australia simultaneously in the history of Australia.
The voters’ sentiments have been more of a protest for John Howard’s policy than supporting Rudd. John’s policies could not satisfy the voters. His policy towards Iraq, climatic changes and labour became the main reasons which cause dissentment among the voters and attracted criticism.
Contrary to Howard who has refused to ratify Kyoto Protocol, Rudd seems determined to ratify the same and will attend a key UN climate change conference in Bali.
Rudd making his stand clear said that though Australia – US military alliance will remain intact but he will gradually withdraw Australian Troops from Iraq.
His first conference was full of assurance of taking initiative on climate change and made education, health and high-speed internet network additional priorities of his government.
Rudd has pledged to govern as an "economic conservative," by dispensing money in school and universities.
Meanwhile, John Howard’s official website has been terminated to reflect the government’s electoral defeat.
John became the second sitting Prime minister to lose his parliament seat after Stanley Bruce in 1929.
However, he will remain the caretaker prime minister until the new ministry is formed.
