The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Mayawati on Monday got a major relief from multi-million garland row as the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court today rejected the public interest litigation (PIL) seeking Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the source of income spent on garland that was presented to her on the occasion of celebrating the silver jubilee of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the birthday of its founder Late Shri Kanshi Ram on March 15.
The lawyers of Lucknow had filed the PIL on March 18 seeking the CBI probe into alleged spent of Rs.200-crore in the 'maharally' and garland weaved on Rs.1000 noted presented to Mayawati.
A Division Bench comprising acting Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court Justice Amitava Lala and Justice Anil Kumar dismissed the PIL after hearing both the parties.
To mark the 25th anniversary of BSP and the birthday of it's founder Kanshi Ram, UP Chief Minister has called a maharally on which a sum of whopping Rs.175-crore were reportedly spent. The party leaders and supporters of Mayawati had gifted her multi-crore garland made of Rs.1000-note.
The Samajwadi Party and the Congress both have alleged the CM of wasting the public money and demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter pointing out the source of funding.
The income tax department has begun its investigation in giant currency garland case and probing the source of income.
