Nov 14: Pakistani legend and cricket icon, Imran Khan who is now a politician has been arrested today by the Pakistani police in Punjab University of Lahore when he was going to address the student protest rally from an unknown hiding place. He was first appeared before the public after slipping from the net of Pakistani police, who tried to house arrest him in the very first hour of imposing emergency.

According to Khalid Batti, a Lahore police officer, “Imran was trying to address the university students against the emergency ruling, while the supporter students of opposition party Jamaat-e-Islami held him and later captured in a room for an hour. They are protesting Imran not to come here and address the students. Later they called the local police and handover to them.”

“He is in police custody. There was a detention order against him and we are going to place him under house arrest” added Khalid.

Rana Mansoor, the district police officer confirmed about the detention of Imran under the charge of breaking the peace and destroying the circumstances during emergency rule. Now he would be held under house arrest for 90 days.”

Earlier, his interview published in some British newspapers in which he said, “There should be no negotiations with Gen Musharraf. I hope to start the movement for the restoration of democracy amongst the student community.”

"I want the students to be mobilised, as well as the lawyers and the political parties, because it has to be a comprehensive movement against the brute force of a military dictator”, said Imran in an interview with BBC in Landon on Tuesday.

Imran has appealed to his political rival Benazir Bhutto to join him in protesting the ‘dictatorship’ and ‘emergency rule of General Parvez Musharraf. However, he also criticised Bhutto for her hidden political knot with General Musharraf.

“I am glad that all the opposition parties have come round to our point of view that is not to compromise with a military dictatorship, but Pakistani people have now lost the confidence in Benazir Bhutto”.

Imran is agreed with Benazir’s point of view regarding general election as Bhutto has said that under the roof of emergency rule, the forthcoming election that is likely to be held in January next year as announced by the president would be meaningless.

Talking against Musharraf, Imran Khan told that Pakistan should withdraw its troops from north-western areas and negotiate with local tribes who are providing shelter to the militants of Taleban and al-Qaeda, while Nato should set a timetable for leaving Afghanistan as report published in British newspapers.

Imran is still Pakistan’s living legend despite of not so popular as a political leader. He won the Cricket World Cup in 1992 and became the ‘Hero of the Country’. After taking retirement he formed a political party ‘Tehreek-e-Insaf’ (Movement for Justice) in 1997, but could not win even a single seat except his own in the next election. At present his party has won only one seat in the national parliament and that is his own. He was also criticised for getting married to a very young girl Jemima, who was the daughter of famous British legend Sir James Goldsmith at the age of 40 while Jemima was only 18 years old and was also not Muslim. Later the divorce of them also be the second reason of his criticism.
